Okay, so I saw this PRADA Medium Prada Galleria Saffiano Leather Bag and I was like, “I gotta have it!” But then I saw the price tag and I was like, “Yeah, no way.” But, you know what? I’m pretty crafty, so I thought, “Why not try to make one myself?”
First things first, I gathered all my materials. I went to the fabric store and picked up some Saffiano leather – or at least something that looked like it. It wasn’t cheap, but it was way cheaper than the real deal. I also grabbed some lining fabric, thread, and some heavy-duty needles. Oh, and I needed some hardware, like buckles and zippers. I found some online that looked pretty close to the ones on the Prada bag.
Next, I had to figure out the pattern. I spent hours looking at pictures of the Galleria bag online, trying to understand how it was put together. I sketched out some rough ideas on paper, and then I started cutting out pieces of fabric. Let me tell you, cutting leather is not easy! It’s tough and it takes forever.
- Cutting the leather – took forever!
- Sewing the pieces together – even longer!
- Attaching the hardware – a real pain!
Once I had all the pieces cut out, I started sewing. I used my sewing machine for the straight seams, but I had to hand-stitch some of the trickier parts. It was slow going, but I was determined to get it right. I probably ripped out and redid more seams than I care to admit.
The hardest part was probably attaching the hardware. I had to punch holes in the leather and then use these little rivets to secure the buckles and zippers. It was a real pain, and I definitely messed up a few times. But eventually, I got it all figured out.
The Result
After weeks of work, I finally finished my bag! And you know what? It actually turned out pretty good! It’s not perfect, of course. There are a few wonky seams and the leather isn’t quite as nice as the real Saffiano. But it looks a lot like the Prada Galleria, and it only cost me a fraction of the price. I’m pretty proud of myself, to be honest. And it gets the work done, I carried it with my work items and it is pretty sturdy.
Would I do it again? Maybe. It was a lot of work, but it was also kind of fun. And now I have a unique bag that no one else has. Plus, I learned a lot about leatherworking, which is always a good thing. So yeah, I’d say it was worth it in the end. And it feels great when people asked me where I got my bag from.
